GPS for Nokia E71 - Updated

The Nokia E71 is really a feature packed phone with the inclusion of A-GPS. However, the nokia maps included is not free for use. So what are your options after the trial runs out?

Oh yes, there is Google Maps. While greatly accurate and good coverage worldwide, it does not offer turn by turn voice navigated routing. Imagine while you are driving and need directions, it is just impractical to look at your phone all the time. Having voice prompting like in a proper GPS system is the way to go, and safer as well.

Heard of Garmin XT? It is a a bluetooth GPS receiver made by Garmin for phones which do not have GPS built in. This is how it looks like:The following is how to get the Garmin XT application on your Nokia E71 using the in-built GPS with Singapore maps for free.

I have updated this section with more details as quite a few people are having trouble installing the application and get it running.

For those of you who prefer a all-in-one download pack, download it here.

First download the following files and install them on your phone.

step 1 This is the installer for Garmin XT Version 4

Extract the files to your desktop. You should see a "Garmin Folder". Connect your phone in "mass storage" mode, and copy the entire "Garmin" folder to your memory card.

After that, in your phone, go to office-->file manager--->tab to mem card --->Garmin folder.
Inside you will see a "Garmin MobileXT.sis" file. Click on that, and it will install the Garmin XT program on your phone.

step 2 This is the installer for support files for Garmin XT Version 4

step 3 This is the installer for basemap for Garmin XT Version 4

For step 2 and 3, they install the same way. After you have downloaded the files, extract them, and the following should appear:

Click on setup, and you should get this:

Your memory card location should appear in the box. Select it and click install.

step 4 This is the installer for Garmin XT Version 5

Installing all the above files will give you the full set of files needed to run the Garmin XT application, plus updated to the latest version 5. If you choose not to upgrade to version 5, you can stop at step 3.

Step 5 - download Garmin Keygen here.

Input your GPS id and generate a software unlock code. Copy your generated code and paste it in notepad. Save the new file with the updated code under "sw.unl" file name. Now, copy "sw.unl" to your Garmin directory on your phone. Make sure you saved the file under "sw.unl" and not "sw.unl.txt". This step is important for the Garmin XT application to enable you to use the E71's internal GPS.

Where is the GPS ID?

After you installed the Garmin XT application successfully, start it up. When you get in, you will see 3 icons at the bottom, click on the middle one (Tools).

Then Click on settings.

Then scroll down and click on the "About" icon.

There you will see the version number. Below it is a series of numbers called the ESN. That is the ID you should put into the keygen.

Step 6 - download the Singapore map here, and put it in the Garmin directory in your phone. The map is unlocked, so no need for any unlock code.

You are done! Now power up your Garmin XT application on your phone, and you should have a working map ready to navigate. Enjoy!

If you run into any trouble, do leave a comment, and I will help you. :)

  2. yes. It works with the latest firmware. My E71 is using the updated firmware as well. After you extracted the files to your desktop, you should see a "garmin" folder.

connect your phone and select "mass storage" option when the phone prompts you. Copy the entire "Garmin" folder to your phone mem card.

After that, in your phone,go to office-->file manager--->tab to mem card --->Garmin folder.

inside you will see a "Garmin MobileXT.sis" file. Click on that, and it will install the Garmin XT program on your phone.

    Try it.

  5. Thanks for the post. At last I have a working GPS Map on my phone!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hi thanks for this. But what is my GPS id? What unit id do I put into the keygen?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Sorry for the dumb question but how do I install the files into my phone? After I extract all of them, do I put all the files into one folder and just copy over? Thanks

  9. For the question of "how to install the files on the phone", it is similarly mentioned before.

You extract the files to your desktop, you should see a "garmin" folder.

connect your phone and select "mass storage" option when the phone prompts you.

That is for the main program. For the basemap and support files, similarly, you connect your phone and selecting "mass storage". Extract the files, and a dialogue box will pop up. You should be able to select your memory card location and install the files over.

  10. Thanks for the update. Much easier to follow now. Got it up and running. Thanks!

  11. hi.. do i really need usb to install step 3 and 4? can i use bluetooth connection instead?

    ReplyDelete
  12. one more thing.. i cant seem to boot up without step 3 and 4.. is step 3/4 a must?

    ReplyDelete
  13. You need to connect your usb cable to copy the files over. Remember to select "Mass Storage". Bluetooth will not work. Step 3 is the basemap. You need to have a basemap to display a map on the Garmin XT. If you don't install the basemap, the Garmin XT app should still load, but nothing to display yet.

Step 4 is the upgrade to version 5. You don't need to install this if you are happy with version 4.

  14. is it because I didnt do step 3&4 tt's why i keep seeing the splash (Garmin) page and the application close by itself? I noticed that some funny characters .jpeg files cant be extracted for GMobileXT_S60.exe. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7OI5NPpVZ60/SWysN3tN2BI/AAAAAAAAAXU/x7WXgqJaXt4/s320/Screenshot0002.jpg

  15. After you install the main Garmin app, you should be able to get in. After the Garmin splash screen appear, you should be in the main program, and should not throw you out of the program, or end suddenly.

I have installed for others' E71 using the same files with no problems at all. I will suggest removing the program from your phone and download the files again and try reinstalling it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've tried removing and installing times again.. not sure why.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ok. I can only suggest you install version 5 only. As that has the latest updates. The direct link is here:

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3939

It is strange though that you have the problem installing the files. You should be able to run the program without it hanging.

See if it works for you.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It works perfectly for me. Thanks for the post!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I managed to get until step 4, and when I tried to start it up on my phone, it said 'unable to execute file for security reasons'. What happened and how do I get it to work again? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Okay I managed to solve the above problem. But now I can't get the singapore map to work. I extracted it and copied it to the Garmin folder but in my phone it says 'unablee to open. file type not supported.' So my location now when I browse the map, is at taiwan.

At the about page, my version is 5.00.20s60.9-ASN. TW which is probably where the taiwan thing came from. Is that a problem? Please advise. Thank you and sorry for the trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sorry to hear that you have so much problems. Basically, for the map, you just have to copy the "gmapsupp" file over to your memory card, Garmin folder.

When you open the Garmin app, it should work. The version you mentioned is okay. Should not have any problems. I have installed many times for E71 and have not encountered your problem yet. That is why I feel it is strange.

Okay, just in case the map is a problem for you, download another version here:

    http://www.2shared.com/file/4650250/bfed5772/GM-MySInMXT.html

    This map is from Malsingmaps.com

It has been tested to work as well.

Extract to desktop, so you can find it easily. copy the file over to the Garmin folder. same thing.

  22. hi

i have installed the Garmin XT successfully but when i tried to run it, it gives me an error message 'Unable to execute files for security reasons'

    any advise? thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "i have installed the Garmin XT successfully but when i tried to run it, it gives me an error message 'Unable to execute files for security reasons'"

If you have installed successfully on your phone, it should run ok.If you get an error message, I suggest you restart your phone and try again. If that doesn't help, reinstall it again.

  24. Wow, seems like people are having some trouble.:) Lucky for me it worked 1st time I try. Just thinking, if it works for me, it should work for you guys as well. Just follow the instructions carefully.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ahhh. Okay I downloaded the other version of the map as you mentioned above. But now I can't tell whether it works or not because every time I start up the thing and try to view map, the application exits itself.

    ReplyDelete
  26. hi, i tried the way you said and garmin started fine. however it defaulted me to Taiwan and also it can't find enable the GPS.

    I am using a E71

    ReplyDelete
  27. it defaults u to taiwan cos ur basemap is taiwan. You have to install the singapore map.

you can't enable the gps cos u might not have followed the instructions to save ur id to the "sw.unl" file. If you did not do that, the system only recognizes bluetooth gps receivers.

I got mine working, so you should have no probs also.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think a lot of troubleshooting came up recently for this post. If you cannot solve your problem, why not go to the forums at www.malsingmaps.com

There are experts there who might be a better help, since it is a GPS community there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. for those with trouble with the main program, go to garmin's website. The link is below.

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-11034-00

    it is all there.

for latest maps, i suggest you go to jerome's website as mentioned in one of the post. The link is below.

    http://gpsmaps.jwpixs.com/

    ReplyDelete
  30. For those who still having trouble with the Garmin app, as suggested, try downloading it again and reinstall. The below link given by Mark is correct. It has all the files there.

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-11034-00

The maps should not be any problems.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I will suggest to download the main Garmin XT app from the main website.

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-11034-00

install the basemap and the support files. It will get your main app running. Then follow the instructions on this post. I got mine working already! Try it.

  32. Hi there.. I have done all steps (include... Make sure you saved the file under "sw.unl" and not "sw.unl.txt". This step is important for the Garmin XT application to enable you to use the E71's internal GPS.)
yet i still unable to activate the E71 GPS. The screen pop up alaways mentioned "Bluetooth is currently turned off. please turn it on...anyone who can help me to solve it?how to use the E71 GPS receiver instead xternal receiver....THANKS

    ReplyDelete
  33. hi...ok.You have done the "sw.unl" file and put it under garmin folder on your phone. That's good.

Now, in your garmin app, under settings, there should be a "remote gps" setting. go to settings-system-remote gps, you must click on that and select internal gps instead of bluetooth.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great Midas...i saw the GPS signal on the screen now... THANKS

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi sorry to trouble you again..now i have done (Step 6 - download the Singapore map here, and put it in the Garmin directory in your phone. The map is unlocked, so no need for any unlock code) however i cant get the Singapore map running on my E71...could you help me? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  36. which map u installed and could not get it running?

If all else fails, i suggest using jerome's maps. I see that some people having trouble with maps end up using jerome's maps and worked for them.

  37. Can I ask if there is a gprs charge on this or its it absoluely free?

    ReplyDelete
  38. It is absolutely free. It only use your GPS. It was tested and it does not make any kind of 3G connections.

    ReplyDelete
  39. oh,sounds great. I was worried cos in the Garmin screen, I saw A-gps listed.

    Thanks!

  40. Hi Bro ,

Gd Job ! How about Thailand Map?

I plan to get a E71 too but deliman between full turn key Win Mobile HP/

    ReplyDelete
  41. For Thailand maps, if you just want Bangkok only, Jerome's website has it. For a full coverage, Malsingmaps.com will be a better help.

For the E71, it is a great "value for money" pda phone and one of the top choices in anyone's book. It is very stable with no crashes or hang ups till date, and I load a lot of apps in my phone. I used a HP and a Treo before, and it crashes quite often.

Plus the E71 is slim or low profile for a pda phone, and it looks great. The only minus points I can say for the E71 is that, it is a fingerprint magnet and the small keys takes some getting used to. I will suggest getting a casing for it as soon as you get it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Using a GPS means that there will be GPRS charges right?

It will end up being very expensive! :(

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nope. GPS does not use GPRS.Much like an in car unit like the Garmin Nuvi series. There is no need for any network connections. Therefore, it will not cost you anything.

Of course, if you use google maps, then it will need to connect to the network to download maps, then you will need to pay for the data charges.

Stick with Garmin XT, and you will be free of any costs.

  44. Hi Midas, when searching for GPS it says "bluetooth is currently turned off".
So i went to tools > settings > system > remote gps

inside there it only have 2 option
    1) connection allowed to Garmin gps device only
    2) Pair new gps

when i enter the "connection allowed to Garmin gps device only" it showed GPS is off and with the N,S,E,W thing

when i click on pair new gps it shows "bluetooth is currently turned off".

Please teach me how to select internal GPS instead of bluetooth???

    ReplyDelete
  45. Did you follow the step to create the "sw.unl" file? cos, after you do that step, you should be able to select to use internal gps.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ahhh, i realsed it is saved as "sw.unl.txt"
Thanks anyway, ur site is great, keep it up

    ReplyDelete
  47. hehe..it is a common mistake for the "sw.unl.txt". Glad you have it working. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sorry Midas, I managed to get the Garmin XT working yesterday, after that I went to download the POI pack put it into Garmin > POI directory.
After which when i tried to run the application again i gets an error message
"unable to execute file for security reasons"

Do you know whats the problem?

    ReplyDelete
  49. The POIs should not cause that problem. I have the same POIs in my garmin/POI directory, and it runs fine.

Have you tried removing the POIs to see if it made any difference?

I suspect is to do with the Garmin program itself.Try restarting your phone, and if that doesn't help, I can only suggest reinstalling the program.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Midas,

I encounter some problems when installing the Garmin. Instead of having the Unlock ESN (GPS ID), I got these following instead:

    IMEI
    IMSI
    Card ID

How do I get the ESN number?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Tried using IMEI, doesn't seem to work, it still trying to connect to Bluetooth device.
The sw.unl file is at root level of Garmin folder? Its not under sub-folder, no?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just seem strange that using the same phone and same program, and we get different problems crop up. Yes, it is at the root directory of the Garmin folder. I can only suggest reinstalling the main Garmin program if all else fails.

The ID you need to put into the "sw.unl" file is actually the unit id. It can also be obtained by clicking on the signal bars on the top left corner when you enter the Garmin program.

See if it works for you.

    ReplyDelete
  53. getting the GPS program to work is easy. Just download the all in one as suggested. It took me just 5-10 mins. Great Job Midas!

    ReplyDelete
  54. hi, it will work on my N95? thanks

    ReplyDelete
  55. N95 has internal GPS and runs on symbian 3rd edition as well. So yes, no reason why it should not work.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I notice that the installation goes into the micro sd card. What if I'm using N95 8GB and don't have a micro sd?? Thanks for the help

    ReplyDelete
  57. You will need a micro SD for it to work. Technically, it will work in internal memory, but the installation program is designed to look for a memory card.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I am bringing my E71 to United States. Where and how can i get a working map for united states? I have got the Singapore one working.. thanks Midas... WB

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thank you for the great tips. May I ask using this same method, what other phone and model can be installed and use the build-in GPS?

    ReplyDelete
  60. To WB: bear in mind that you should only have one set of maps on your micro SD at any one time. If you want to have multiple set of maps for different countries, it is best to use different micro SD cards.

Having said that, go to the following link to download Garmin maps for North America 2009 version. Just extract the rar files and put the file into the micro SD card Garmin root directory as per normal.

    http://www.2shared.com/file/4772496/e52389b7/garminNA2009.html

To Anonymous: you can install the garmin XT program and maps to any symbian 3rd edition phone that has an internal gps.

    .. no file ...

could you advise where is the other link?
    thks

    check it again. It works.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi.. I followed all the steps and it doesn't seem to work.

When i open Garmin XT application:

    I have 4 choices:

    1) Purchase and Go
    2)Begin Free trial
    3) Enter Product key
    4) Connect to a garmin GPS.

I believe it is connect to garmin gps?
When i do that: "Bluetooth is currently turned off, please turn it on" message appears.

I read the blog and tried to go to tools- settings-system-remote GPS. and I got this:

Hi Midas, when searching for GPS it says "bluetooth is currently turned off".
So i went to tools > settings > system > remote gps

inside there it only have 2 option
    1) connection allowed to Garmin gps device only
    2) Pair new gps

when i enter the "connection allowed to Garmin gps device only" it showed GPS is off and with the N,S,E,W thing

when i click on pair new gps it shows "bluetooth is currently turned off".

Please teach me how to select internal GPS instead of bluetooth??? I am not sure how to create the sw.unl.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Chris, sounds like your problem is because you have not created the "sw.unl" file. A lot of people have trouble because they did not create the file, so don't worry.

If you downloaded my "all in one" gps files, there is a garmin keygen in there. The link is as follows:

    http://www.2shared.com/file/4652076/cd358c20/GPS_Files.html

You need to input the "GPS ID" into the keygen to generate a code. The GPS ID can be obtained from the "About Icon" within the Garmin GPS program or can also be obtained by clicking on the signal bars on the top left corner when you enter the Garmin program.

After you get the code, select and copy it. Open your notepad, and paste the code into the notepad. Make sure to save your file under the name "sw.unl" and not "sw.unl.txt".

Connect your phone under "mass storage" mode, and place the "sw.unl" file in the root directory of your Garmin folder. That's it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hi.. I guess imei code doesn't work, will download the all in one to get the GPS ID to generate a code.

Silly question, How do I save under sw.unl?
Under Notepad- "save as"- file name: do i type in sw.unl, save as type: "all files?" and encoding: I have four choices: ANSI,Unicode,Unicode big endian or UTF-8. please advise. I am pretty IT illiterate.

    Thank you so much.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yes....to save sw.unl....type in sw.unl in notepad...save as all files.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi.. Got it working.. Finally!!!

Thanks so much for all your help and I think this is going to be one of the most used application on my phone.

I have provided this link to some of my friends who have the same phone and believe that all of us are very grateful for this Turn to Turn GPS.

    Cheers man!

    ReplyDelete
  68. No worries man. Glad you have it working. We are all here to share. Enjoy it!

  69. Midas, I have copy the US and SGP map file onto the same SD card and rename the map which i want to use to gmapsupp.img while keeping the one not used as some other names. Hence i can keep 2 separate maps in one SD card and renaming the map file depending of which map i am using. hope it works. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hi,

found the problem. Maybe you should add this in your instruction. After installing version 5 file using the same method as in step 2 & 3, go back to the phone and install the version 5 "Garmin MobileXT.sis" file which is located in the memory card.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi,

I managed to follow the guide and succesfully install (n cr*cked Garmin 4.10.60s60.9), including with Map of Jakarta.
I will be traveling to Malay n S'pore in a couple of weeks, what i would like to ask is it possible for me to install the map u provided in step 6?

  75. "After installing version 5 file using the same method as in step 2 & 3, go back to the phone and install the version 5 "Garmin MobileXT.sis" file which is located in the memory card."

    - Actually you can install version 5 straight away if you like. Some people chose to stick with earlier versions as they found it to be more stable.

  76. Hi Midas, I managed to install everything and the program works fine..i also copied the SG map over but it does not show when i open the program..how do i activate the map? Will the map show whilst the phone is searching for the nearest satelite? Pls kindly advise..Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  77. You need not do anything to activate the map. It is an unlocked map. When you get signal for the GPS, the map should show your current location automatically. Try it outdoors or near a window if you can't get a signal.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hi Midas, Thanks! it works perfectly now! just another qns..since the internal GPS is activated whilst using Garmin, am i correct to say that it will deactivate when I exit Garmin..i noticed that after using it for a while, the battery level does go down at least 2 bars..

    ReplyDelete
  79. Glad you have it working. :) Yes, the internal GPS will deactivate the moment you exit the GPS app. Using GPS unfortunately is heavy on your battery. It is the case for any phone. That is why I will recommend that if you use your E71 to navigate in a car, always get a car charger and plug it in, or you will end up with a flat battery in no time.

    ReplyDelete
  84. after extracting the file from yr link, it is in exe format not sis.

so how should i do about it?

    ReplyDelete
  85. if you are talking about the main garmin XT program, you are supposed to extract to desktop and copy over to ur mem card in the E71. Then within the E71, run the garminxt.sis file to install it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. hi sally thanks.,,,,but when i dl, it is in zip file and i have extracted from the zp files.

it has 3 exe files and 1 map.

    so what should i do?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Midas is probably busy, so I will answer this one for u. :)

Yes, after u extract gps.rar file, there will be 3 files + 1 map.Connect ur E71 and choose mass storage.

    Run Garminxtmobileforsymbian.exe

You should see a menu come up, and your mem card should show up in the menu. install it. That will copy the files over to ur E71.

Then install the other 2 .exe files the same way. You need all 3 files.

Then in ur phone, under office-file manager, look under ur mem card.there should be a garminxt.sis file. click on it and install it. That should get the garmin xt program on ur phone already.

For the map file, just extract and copy the .img file to ur root directory of the Garmin folder.

Don't forget to create the .unl file as well. Then you will be all set.

  90. There are no gprs charges for using the Garmin XT. Really is quite simple to use. Just play around with it. Search by going to where to-POI-Spell Name and search for your destination.

    For Jakarta maps, i dunno..wait for midas..hehe:)

  91. Hi Midas

I have loaded the Garmin XT and the Australian Maps on my E71 but when the program tries to load the maps i get the message"Cant unlock maps using unit ID"
Do you have any ideas as to what i can do

    Thanks in advance

  92. Hi...for the OZ maps, I believe u are supposed to load it up using mapsource 1st and enetring the unlock code...then generate an image file from there. Have you tried it?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hi Sally
I have loaded the MSI file in the map source Folder which installs the program onto the PC and then copies the maps to the E71, is this the correct way to do it.
    I am completely confused

    thanks in advance

    Nortonterry

    ReplyDelete
  94. ok..try this.

1)make sure you have mapsource installed. If you have not, follow this post:

    http://sgnokiae71.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-get-mapsource-working.html

    2) in the oz map file u downloaded, install the msi file. it will setup the files on ur pc. now open mapsource. it should show u have a locked oz map in there. go enter the following to unlock it.

    K9K3L-NPRMA-8NYAW-G35KG-4LM9D

    3) now u have an unlocked map.when u installed mapsource, u should also have a "mapinstall" icon on ur desktop. click on that to transfer the oz map to ur e71.

  96. Thanks Sally for your help in advising people. :)

Malaysia map...the map I have included in this post is a combo of Singapore/Malaysia, but still not extremely detailed for whole of Malaysia I would say. I will upload one if I find a better one. Forget official Garmin maps for Malaysia. They are really outdated.

  97. Hi,

Do i need to convert the Flizip file of the MalSingMaps before i install into Garmin directory of the phone?

If need to, what n how do i convert?

    Thanks for your assistance.

  98. just unzip it. There is an image file inside. No need to convert. Just drop it into the root directory of the Garmin folder on your phone.

  107. "how come i'm always in taiwan, and its always searching for satellites?"

did you install the "sw.unl" file? You have to have this to be able to use the internal GPS. You should be able to get a signal.

"after i do steps 2 n 3, must i click the sis file bro?"

no. no need to click on any sis file.

  109. Hi, I can't copy the entire "Garmin" folder to your memory card. It says files not supported.

  111. Hi Midas,

Thanks for creating this blog to assists us in downloading and installing the driving map. It is fantastic!

    Keep up the good work.

    Thanks again.

  112. You are welcome. We are all here to share.

I see that some people are having trouble getting the map to work. Actually it is really quite simple once you get the hang of it. I have installed for friends in just 5 mins.. :)

There is no walking map, but in the Garmin XT program, under tools-settings-routing, you can actually select the different routing methods..such as for car, bicycle or pedestrian.

  115. Hi Midas

I am on Singtel plan and I noticed that whenever i get connected to the Garmin, there are still (IDEAS Internet) packet data being sent/received? Very minimum - between 1 to 5 kb each time when connected.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  116. the garmin XT program itself does not use any internet or 3G connections. I suspect might be the A-gps where it sometimes uses the network to get a faster lock. On my phone however, i did not notice any connections being made.

Does your E71 takes about 5 to 10 minutes in the open skies to "lock"?

Did i miss a step somewhere?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  124. usually my phone takes 2 mins or less to get a lock.Really depends on area you are in. In the morning "cold start" takes a bit longer. If takes too long to lock, try resetting your phone.

  125. Hi Midas, I'll be getting my E71, was fasinated to see your posts on GPS.
Wonder if you can advise me where can I get the Garmin XT bluetooth GPS receiver as I tried to search online but can't find. Any idea how much would it cost me? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Yep, the E71 is a very stable PDA phone. Good choice.:)

Why would you want to get the Garmin XT bluetooth GPS receiver?

As you can see from my post, you can make use of the E71's internal GPS receiver and just install the Garmin XT program. You will be getting GPS for free..:)

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oo...I think I misinterpreted. I still thought I will need to purchase a bluetooth GPS receiver to make it work. (sorry I'm a noob on GPS) Okok thanks for the clarification! Will be getting the E71 tonight and will follow your post instructions! :D

  128. Hi Midas,
Thank you so much for this post.. Got mine up and running...
I was one of the unlucky few who managed to bump into all the above problems and got around it using the posts here.. thanks to all of you..
    Few suggestions:
--> Instead of having the Unlock ESN (GPS ID), those who got these following instead in ABOUT screen:

    IMEI
    IMSI
    Card ID

Pls use the Card ID.. I have successfully done it.

--> Those "unable to open files due to security reasons"
    try installing the GarminMobileXT.sis again..

--> Those who upgrade to version 5 straightaway from Ver 4 also need to install the GarminMobileXT.sis again.. I had my issue resolved by this.. (I found the ver 5 .sis file outside the Garmin folder by default when copied)

Hope above helps to those with issues,

    Cheers..

  129. Congrats!

Thanks for the input. I am sure it will help people. :)

  132. Hi Midas,
After I save sw.unl and copy to Garmin directry it still show as text file.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I got stuck at the sw.unl part. Saved it the way everyone says, Save As 'all files' but the 'bluetooth is not on' error msg just keep popping.

Like Chris said, does it got to do with the encoding option: ANSI, Unicode, Unicode big endian or UTF-8? Because default its saved under ANSI.

    Pls help!

    ReplyDelete
  134. the sw.unl file contains nothing except for the device ID. if your file is sw.unl.txt, just rename it to sw.unl. works for me. Put in in Garmin root directory. You should be able to use the internal gps then.

    ReplyDelete
  135. mine just can't work. tried many times.... *cry* don't know what went wrong..

    ReplyDelete
  136. listen....use accessories->notepad.
    paste the id in there
save as (all files) (ANSI)--> sw.unl

    that's it.

    ReplyDelete
  137. yup thats exactly what i did. but it still shows error msg. save under root directory meaning the first drive right after we go into the Garmin folder right?

wondering if i need to reinstall everything :(

    ReplyDelete

  148. Hi

After installing Garmin, i find that my battery drains quiet fast without activation of the GPS.
Previously, after charging it could last min 4-5 days with some phone usage, sms, wifi, etc. Now it hardly last 2-2.5 days - same usage without using Garmin GPS.
Phone is about 4 months old, is it the battery getting faulty or .........????

    Any advice please, tks

    ReplyDelete
  149. Hi

This is cause by your Garmin XT software.
what you can do is after u run the Garmin XT application..RESTART your mobile phone.
Because when u start your Garmin..it will start one process..althought you turn off ur garmin afterward...the process will still running and drain ur battery till end of the day.
For the detail about the problem..try to google it...i can't find back the thread i saw before about this problem..but this is the solution to solve the problem...

    ReplyDelete
  150. HERE COME THE details....
Recently my E71 had been running flat pretty quick. With normal usage of a few calls and messaging, the phone went from a full charge to flat in a matter of 3 days. Wow!! What happened???! Well..as puzzling as it could be, it was down to my installation of Garmin XT latest version 5. This version activate the cardrunner.dll on your sys\bin folder which runs garmin tsrautostart.exe file to run in the background.

How to get around this problem.

    1) Install nokia's energy profiling program.

    2) Close all phone programs and run the above program checking your phone running wattage. With the garmin tsrautostart.exe running in the phone's background, your power usage will be around 0.09-0.15w.

    3) Plug your phone to your computer and access your memory card sys\bin folder and look for cardrunner.dll file.

    4) Edit and rename the file (ex. disable_cardrunner.dll)

    5) Now reset your phone and run nokia energy profiler again. You should see that your phone will be running about 0.02-0.14w. Yes..now you are getting the life back on your E71, you will get back the battery juice and the phone will last another 3-4 days more under normal usage.

    6) However, do take note. Whenever you run your garmin xt, tsrautostart.exe will be ran and you will start losing battery juice. Reset your phone after you use garmin xt and things will be back to normal.

  161. I had problems that face by most peoples with their E71 and Garmin XT.
After follow details instruction and install the Garmin XT.

Finally resolve , but I 2 more problems:

    1) It still searching for GPS !! - I had sw.ulk file store at /Garmin.

    2) After that I click 'No' for not continous search gps device ..the GMXT software just quit !!.

I have no access to GMXT software (program quite automatically after failed to find gps.)

Then I have no way to look for my unit ID at all ? I try other method press *#06# to retive the IMEI code..then user cpnverter convert to unit ID ...then use GarmenKeyGen generate code at put in sw.ulk, store it at /Garmin.
It is the right way ? as I have no access to GMXT software, it will automatic quit it self after no GPS devide found.

  162. Hi all,
I had discovered the reason why problems happened to some of the ppls try to install the GMXT in E71. This happen to user download the latest 5.00(30) and above.

    - problem like can't find gps device.
    - problem like the program quite after internal gps not detected.

all this are due to the sw.ulk key was incorrect generate due to the user not able to get the correct gps unit ID.

    Solution:
Install only the GMTX version 5.00(20) and older. Do not install 5.00(30) or newer.
Reason is you not able to retrive the unit ID

If you install 5.00(30) or newer. The new SOFTWARE purposely force you to enter the product code..if not ...it will quit after no product code enter. Therefore you not able to see the unit ID on "about" section.

Even thought you create sw.ulk you can by pass the product code entry but program will quite once the internal gps cannot be found ( asically wrong key). You have no way to view the unit ID..no unit ID ..no proper sw.ulk is generate therfore you can't use the GMTX on your phone internal gps.

p/s: Download 5.00(20) and older.. you can in this blog site. Do not use the 5.00(30) or newer.

Thank you for this excellent guide. I had some difficulties to install the program that I have resolved using the following step:
When I entered the About screen, there was no Unit ID but, imei, imsi and card id. Use the card ID to generate the sw.unl file. Also it seems that the key generator does not always generate the correct unlock key (the one that you paste to sw.unl). If one unlocking value is not working, try to generate another one. It is possible to use this program with any map according to the instructions at http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1151 (I have successfuly installed european maps using the information in that post)

  178. Hi Midas,
I just have a question I need to ask.

Do you just copy over the file "GarminMobileXT.sis" which is located under GMobileXT_S60\Garmin? Or do you need to copy all the folders under GMobileXT_S60 as there are 2 folders in GMobileXT_S60?

    So it looks like this
    GmobileXT_S60
    |- [Garmin]
(all below are under the folder "Garmin")
    |- [Apps]
    |- [cache]
    |- [Font]
    |- [GPX]
    |- [Help]
    |- [jpeg]
    |- [poi]
    |- [vehicle]
    |- [Voice]
    |- GarminMobileXT.sis
    |- [system]
(all below are under the folder "system")
    |- [Apps]
    |- [Recogs]
    etc etc

It looks like the first [Garmin] folder contains lots of files, I'm quite sure they are useful but not sure if I just need to copy over JUST the GarminMobileXT_S60.sis and proceed from there?

  191. Are you using the latest version of Garmin XT? The latest does support 5800. Have you enabled the use of the internal gps via the keygen and in garmin goto settings...tools to change to use of remote gps instead of bluetooth.

  192. Hi, i have a problem. After I follow all the step from 1 to 4, i try running the application to try and get the GPS ID but there is an error message stopping me from running it. Error message says "Unable to execute file for Security Reason"

  194. I tried it today...It work pretty much! Just that i don't know why it can't navigate to the exact address? For Example i key in the house number and the street name, it can only bring me to the street but not the house number?

  195. Thanks for this information! I have 2 questions.
    1. Is there a way to have the voice navigation pronounce the street names?

    2. How do I update using the latest maps?

  196. FYI: MobileXT v5.00.50 has been released

    Changes:

    - Provide exit option to the software activation page
    - Correct the turn preview page in landscape orientation
    - Correct an error that occurs when the Arrival button is selected
    - Correct the text color of the main map page when displayed in night mode

  197. I think it might be clearer to mention in Step 4 that you need to click on the .sis file.
