Garmin XT Map Archive

From my previous posts, I gathered that many of you are already using the Garmin XT app for your Nokia E71, and I am sure you will agree that it is one of the best GPS app available for our phones.

In addition, I have also received requests for more maps. Basically, there are 2 types of maps available for use on Garmin XT. One is the official garmin release, which are sold in the form of SD cards or DVDs. They are available for various regions around the world. They come with an unlock code for you to unlock your maps, and they are quite costly. The other type of maps are of course custom maps put together using mapsource or similar programs.

Here in this post, I aim to provide links to all the maps that I currently have available to make it easy for you to locate them, and will add on as they become available. Hope you like this post. :)

    Fixing Minor Scratches on E71

There comes a time in the ownership of your phone that you will get some minor scratches. When that happens, you might be cursing on that decision to invest in a casing for your phone. :)
If the severity of the scratches are like the phone below, you don't need a polish product, you need a new housing.

So long as the scratches are minor, they can be fixed. There are plenty of products out there that can do this. For me, I normally use a soft micro-fiber cloth available at most supermarkets or car care centres and a high gloss polish such as the Autoglym Super Resin Polish.

First, make sure that you phone is cleaned of any dust. Then apply a little of the polish and work on the affected areas. Since the polish is water based, make sure not to apply too much and to avoid it from getting into the phone itself. I find the super resin polish pretty good, and removes fine scratches with ease. Check out my phone below after a good polish.

    Mirrored Screen Protector Review

The following are two videos of a review of the Mirrored Screen protector from YouTube . This review is for a 3G iphone, but is available for the E71 as well. I find that it is a good alternative to traditional clear screen protectors if you want something different. However, since the E71's screen is much smaller compared to the iphone, you will not get the big mirror effect.

GPS Maps for Singapore and other regions

My recommendation to get the latest maps for Singapore will be at http://gpsmaps.jwpixs.com or simply known as Jerome's Maps. The download section consists of 2 types of maps. Public and Donor. Public maps are free maps, while Donor maps are for "members only". To become a donor, simply donate to the site. I remembered it was something around $5. If you ask me, I will say it is worth it, as you get free updates on maps in Singapore and other regions as well.

As you might have guessed, the latest maps reside in the donor section. For most people though, the free maps are good enough. It is a personal choice. Just to note that all the Donor maps are locked. So you will need an unlock code from Jerome to free up the maps for use.

    Silicone Case for E71

Silicone Casings or skin casings as they call it are one of the cheapest protective cases you can get for the E71. They are priced between $4-$6, and are sold in many phone shops. Of course you can get more branded ones like those offered by Boxwave, which is much more expensive.

The good thing about these skin cases is that, they are relatively cheap, covers the entire phone minus the necessary cutouts for the screen, keypads and the usual access, and they are low profile. So in a sense, you don't add much bulk to your phone. The material is quite smooth, and yet adds grip to the phone. If you put your phone with the skin case on your car dash, it will not slip off. Locally, the usual colours you can get are normally in black, white and grey.

So what is the difference between the cheaper skin cases compared to the Boxwave one? Basically, only one difference. The boxwave skin cases are a lot thicker. If you ask me, just get one locally. It serves its purpose well enough.

    POI Pack for Garmin XT

In a previous post on how to get Garmin XT on your E71, I mentioned how to get the application on your E71 with Singapore maps for free. I am sure many of you already are happy navigating on your new toy. :)

One of the things you may be looking at next will be to add some POIs (Points of Interests) on your GPS system. You can find numerous user created POIs at Malsingmaps.com

However, to make it easy for you, I have created a POI pack for you to download here.

    What it includes are:

    1)AXS Stations
    2) ERP Gantries
    3) 4D/TOTO outlets
    4) POSB/DBS ATMs
    5) SAM Stations
    6) Speed/Redlight Cameras

Just unzip the file, and copy all of the contents to your Garmin/POI directory, and you are done.

    Happy navigating!

    Nokia E71 Noreve Case Review

I came to hear of the brand Noreve when I was still using my Nokia N95. It was some time back. Nothing much has changed. They are still pretty quick to come out with quality leather cases for mobile devices as soon as they hit the market.

    Characteristics
    - Elegant case conceived in top quality handcrafted leather
    - Compatible with smartphone Nokia E71
    - Access to basic functions (multiple openings on the leather)
    - Practical thanks to its magnetic closure
    - Slim and padded design
    - Protects the device in an optimal manner
    - Two MicroSD card slots
    - Speakers stainless steel mesh protector
    - Camera lens access
    - Opening for recharge
    - Headphone access
    - Beautiful interior lining embossed with the Noreve logo
    - Completely removable sturdy belt clip (swivels 360 degrees)

I will be very direct here. If you are looking for a high quality casing for your E71 that covers the entire phone and don't mind adding a bit of bulk to your very sexy Nokia, then this might be the casing for you.

Quality wise, this is one of the best casing I have come across. Leather feels like leather, smells like leather, and is good quality leather. The casing is also nice padded, which adds a touch of luxury to it. Stitching is nicely done, and no unsightly hanging threads can be found. I have seen other cases which seems like a cheap piece of leather covering a cardboard which they call it a casing. This is not the case here.

As you can see from the pic below, the casing covers the entire phone when closed, and exposing the screen and keypads when opened. Of course, there are cutouts for the camera and all essential buttons on the sides. There are even 2 tiny leather pouches on the flap of the casing to place your Micro SDs in. There is also an option to attach a belt clip if you prefer to hang it on your belt. One of the good things about this case is that the flap releases downwards instead of upwards like in most other cases. I don't know about you, but it looks funny to me having a flap over your head when speaking on the phone.

One of the best things about buying a Noreve casing is the freedom of choice to choose your favourite colours. If you don't like it in black, what about white or red? Excellent!

They ship internationally as well, and their online store can be found here.

    Threaded SMS for E71

"The Conversation is an add-on application that allows you to follow your communication with contacts as streams of conversations, which it organizes, based on individual contacts. The application also makes it very easy to reply to received messages and continue an ongoing conversation with the contact.

After installation, the application will appear in your device as a new tab in your Contacts application. You can also set the application to be a short-cut key (e.g., left-soft-key or right-soft-key) or standby application icon in the Settings menu option in your terminal."

Personally, I do not feel that the application is well integrated. But for those interested, here is the full application file.

3 Basic Shortcut Keys for new users

I remembered when I first got my E71, I was fumbling with some basic shortcut keys. So here they are for new users of the E71:

    1) Toggle Bluetooth on/off - press and hold * key

    2) Toggle silent mode - press and hold # key

    3) Access internet - press and hold 0 (zero) key

    E71 Car Mount

A car mount for your E71 is an excellent addition on all counts. Be it you want to use your E71 as a in-car navigation system, or to easily see who is calling you while driving instead of looking all over the place for your phone, it is a must have, unless you don't drive.

There are of course tons of different mounts available for the E71 ranging from suction cup mounts to vent mounts. The good news is that most universal mounts will fit. I got mine from Autobacs. It comes in two parts. One for the mount itself, and one for the cradle. It costs about $8 each. Pretty reasonably priced.

More importantly is the quality, which is pretty good. First, the suction cup mount works like the famous RAM mounts, which is a pressured mount activated by a lever. This ensures that it has a solid firm fit against your car windshield. Once it is on, it will not come off.

Secondly, there are these little knobs for adjusting the mounting angle of the mount and the cradle to ensure you will find an ideal mounting position.

Thirdly, and most importantly, the cradle itself is heavily padded to hold your phone safely in place without the chance of damaging the phone, and reducing vibration. The side arms are adjustable too, so you can find a tight fit for your phone if you like. Releasing the side arms is easily done by pushing a button on top. Beautiful!

If you ask me what is bad about this mount, i will have to say that it is pretty good, but some vibration is still there, but I am being really picky here. For the price, this one is tough to beat.

Advice when you get your E71 home

If you are about to shop for a Nokia E71, make sure to double check for any blemishes on the phones, like scratches and so on. Make sure you are happy with the physical condition of the phone before you say yes to the sales person. As there are no more 1-1 exchange on all Nokia phones, you can only cry about it if you discover something later.

Ok, so you bought your E71. Congrats, and welcome to the family. The first thing you will notice is how shiny it looks, and definitely a fingerprint magnet. Guilty as charged! :) The standard leather sleeve which comes with the phone is too cumbersome to use, as you have to take the phone out everytime you want to use it.

It is just an accident waiting to happen, so get yourself a better case. A full leather case offers the best protection, but adds bulk to the phone. Forget about crystal casings, as they will crack sooner or later. Also, forget about the hype of Invisibishields, as the cutouts are not very well done, there will be gaps on the phone, and it looks awful. I would suggest just get a silicone skin case. They are cheap, protects the phone and not much bulk is added. Next, I will suggest get a screen protector for the phone.

There you have it. A well protected E71 ready for daily abuse...so to speak.

GPS for Nokia E71 - Updated

The Nokia E71 is really a feature packed phone with the inclusion of A-GPS. However, the nokia maps included is not free for use. So what are your options after the trial runs out?

Oh yes, there is Google Maps. While greatly accurate and good coverage worldwide, it does not offer turn by turn voice navigated routing. Imagine while you are driving and need directions, it is just impractical to look at your phone all the time. Having voice prompting like in a proper GPS system is the way to go, and safer as well.

Heard of Garmin XT? It is a a bluetooth GPS receiver made by Garmin for phones which do not have GPS built in. This is how it looks like:The following is how to get the Garmin XT application on your Nokia E71 using the in-built GPS with Singapore maps for free.

I have updated this section with more details as quite a few people are having trouble installing the application and get it running.

For those of you who prefer a all-in-one download pack, download it here.

First download the following files and install them on your phone.

step 1 This is the installer for Garmin XT Version 4

Extract the files to your desktop. You should see a "Garmin Folder". Connect your phone in "mass storage" mode, and copy the entire "Garmin" folder to your memory card.

After that, in your phone, go to office-->file manager--->tab to mem card --->Garmin folder.
Inside you will see a "Garmin MobileXT.sis" file. Click on that, and it will install the Garmin XT program on your phone.

step 2 This is the installer for support files for Garmin XT Version 4

step 3 This is the installer for basemap for Garmin XT Version 4

For step 2 and 3, they install the same way. After you have downloaded the files, extract them, and the following should appear:

Click on setup, and you should get this:

Your memory card location should appear in the box. Select it and click install.

step 4 This is the installer for Garmin XT Version 5

Installing all the above files will give you the full set of files needed to run the Garmin XT application, plus updated to the latest version 5. If you choose not to upgrade to version 5, you can stop at step 3.

Step 5 - download Garmin Keygen here.

Input your GPS id and generate a software unlock code. Copy your generated code and paste it in notepad. Save the new file with the updated code under "sw.unl" file name. Now, copy "sw.unl" to your Garmin directory on your phone. Make sure you saved the file under "sw.unl" and not "sw.unl.txt". This step is important for the Garmin XT application to enable you to use the E71's internal GPS.

    Where is the GPS ID?

After you installed the Garmin XT application successfully, start it up. When you get in, you will see 3 icons at the bottom, click on the middle one (Tools).

    Then Click on settings.

Then scroll down and click on the "About" icon.

There you will see the version number. Below it is a series of numbers called the ESN. That is the ID you should put into the keygen.

Step 6 - download the Singapore map here, and put it in the Garmin directory in your phone. The map is unlocked, so no need for any unlock code.

You are done! Now power up your Garmin XT application on your phone, and you should have a working map ready to navigate. Enjoy!

If you run into any trouble, do leave a comment, and I will help you. :)

    Singapore's Very Own E71 Blog

    Hi, and welcome.

There is no doubt that the Nokia E71 pda phone is a hit in Singapore. Just take a look at the very limited stocks in mobile phone shops and i am sure you will nod your head in agreement. I had to run around to various outlets to buy my E71, and they have only 1 set left!

Monitoring the prices, it is anything but going down. I just checked the prices, and it has increased a little, by $30 at most places. So, for those of you who already have this beautiful phone, congrats and enjoy it. If you are currently looking to buy the E71, I suggest you make the effort not only at the bigger phone shops, but at smaller partner shops as well. It is well worth the effort, and I am sure you will enjoy the phone tremendously when you get it. It is a pda phone which is slim, stable and great value for money. So what are you waiting for?
